About Us

People's Parliament is one of the oldest NGOs (non-governmental organizations) in Leskovac and South Serbia, founded on August 15, 1999.

Exactly 40 days earlier, founders of the People's Parliament initiated and lead, in that time, the most massive anti-regime civic protests in Serbia.

Almost immediately after these protests have ended, People's Parliament was officially founded and later, during November 1999, registered as an association of citizens, in accordance with domestic law.
At that very beginning, the organization gathered more than a hundred of members and sympathizers.
During this period of time, People's Parliament mostly acted as a local movement gathering pro-democraticly oriented individuals who advocated for changes i political and social systems of that time.

When democratic changes in the country indeed happened, on October 5th 2000, in accordance with newly arisen political and social situation, People's Parliament was restructured into non-profit and non-governmental organization with clearly defined objectives and domains of operations.

When we look back, we can freely say that People's Parliament represents one of the most respectable and most active NGOs in Serbia with a ten-year history of project activities behind us.

During this ten years, People's Parliament longed to help creation of favorable conditions for implementation of the democratic changes project in Serbia, as well as development of civil society, democracy and economy, primarily in South Serbia, and in the whole country.

Today, as the organization that implements its project activities in whole country, People's Parliament implements activities of general social benefit in domains such as: development of democracy and civil society, advancement of socio-political status of young people, strenghtening of local governments and public administration institutions, establishment of cross-border and regional cooperation...
Majority of activities that we implement in these areas are so called public advocacy activities that promote and protect citizen's rights.

Since, People's Parliament is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, our work is funded exclusively through project-basis donations made by foreign and domestic donors.
